Kindred The Family Soul is Aja Graydon and Fatin Dantzler—artists, songwriters, lovers, and family. Both began their careers as teenagers and grew up in the record business, with Fatin producing his first released material at 17 and Aja signing her first recording contract at 14. Introduced in 1997 through The Roots’ production camp, the two developed a strong creative chemistry and, by 1998, became husband and wife. While navigating new parenthood, they made the decision to perform together, giving birth to Kindred The Family Soul.
The duo became a staple of Philadelphia’s famed Black Lily showcase, earning a reputation for electric live performances backed by a full band. The Lily fostered a creative movement that included artists such as Jill Scott, Jazmine Sullivan, Musiq Soulchild, Floetry, and Jaguar Wright. An introduction from Jill Scott to Hidden Beach Recordings led to the release of Kindred’s acclaimed 2003 debut album, Surrender to Love, featuring the top-ten Urban Adult Contemporary hits “Far Away” and “Stars,” along with a Soul Train Award and a BET Award nomination.
Subsequent albums including In This Life Together, The Arrival, Love Has No Recession, and Legacy of Love further established Kindred The Family Soul as a voice for couples and families, presenting an enduring image of love, resilience, and partnership. Through consistent touring, independent projects, and community-focused work, Kindred continues to share music rooted in authenticity, purpose, and the power of connection—on stage and beyond.
