We are all proud to host the thirteenth annual benefit concert for Britt Krebbs, and now JC Lawson, to celebrate their lives with friendship and music.
The tradition started after our dear friend, Britt, tragically died by suicide on October 17, 2011. For many years, Britt would grab his guitar and join the extremely talented guitarist, JC, to play at different music events. Along the way, Britt was instrumental in reaching out to a group of old friends who had played together in bands, some since high school, to once again make music together: Jim Lawson, an extraordinary musician and our band leader; Kevin Pape, a guitarist and friend of Britt’s and Jimmy’s going back to high school; Deb Noon, a vocalist on a number of projects with Kevin and JC; Jim Pape, a drummer and one of Britt’s closest friends; Chuck Connolly, who had worked with Jim and ironically was the cousin of another member of our close knit group, Chic Wilson; and Bernie Franke, who, although out of music since his early twenties, enjoyed a friendship with the gang, including playing music together all the way back to the 8th grade! Bernie was eager to participate and after JC’s tutoring and encouragement, he joined in.
As we gathered at the funeral to remember Britt’s life, we realized how much influence Britt had had in creating our band’s legacy. We then named our band, Brooke Salem Krewe, after Britt Stevens Krebs, linking in the address of the Church of Jimmy (our rehearsal venue) at the corner of Brooke and Salem roads. And we decided that the very best way to honor him would be to continue playing music together, starting with our first tribute concert 13 years ago. That first memorial and benefit concert was a great success and established our goal of fundraising and building awareness around suicide prevention. The tradition carries on to this day, now with the added poignancy of honoring Jimmy Lawson who succumbed to cancer on February 11, 2024. Jimmy’s spirit lives on now through the love and musicianship of Donna, Jim’s wife and our vocalist, and Matt, Jim’s son and our bass player.
Many talented folks have added joy to this event over the years, and now we are joined by Rob Taylor and Denny Angel. Rob is another member of the close group of friends and plays mandolin and guitar; he’s also plays for the Mill Creek Drifters. Denny also crossed over from the Mill Creek Drifters, to bring his talented slide guitar chops.
We are a band blessed with talented musicians who have contributed to the band over the years, sharing many crossovers and back-stories, too many to cover here! But most importantly, what you’re enjoying tonight is the culmination of lifelong friendships steeped in the love of playing music together. Please join us in the celebration!
