For more than 20 years, BlackHawk has shared a distinctive harmony with their voices, their songs, and their fans—selling over 7 million albums, scoring some of the ‘90s’ most memorable country hits, and continuing to draw large audiences to their electrifying live shows. Today, the band honors its legacy while forging ahead with the same creative spirit that defined them from the start. “We approached country with smart songs and unique harmonies for people who may not automatically like country,” says co-founder and lead vocalist Henry Paul.
Formed by Paul, Van Stephenson, and Dave Robbins, BlackHawk blended Southern rock, pop sensibilities, and rich vocal arrangements that set them apart. Their 1993 debut produced the smash “Goodbye Says It All” and a string of Top 5 hits including “Every Once in a While,” “I Sure Can Smell the Rain,” and “Down in Flames,” leading to Double-Platinum success and an ACM nomination. Follow-up albums delivered more classics—“I’m Not Strong Enough to Say No,” “Like There Ain’t No Yesterday,” “Big Guitar,” and “There You Have It”—solidifying the trio’s place as one of country’s most unique bands.
In 1999, Stephenson was diagnosed with melanoma, and after his passing in 2001, the band established the Van Stephenson Memorial Cancer Fund, raising nearly a quarter-million dollars in his honor. Paul and Robbins carried on, releasing Greatest Hits, Spirit Dancer, and Down From the Mountain, and touring for a new generation of fans. Today, BlackHawk continues to record and perform with an all-star touring band, delivering shows that remain emotionally and musically powerful. “We owe it to the music, to ourselves, to Van, and to the fans,” Henry says. “That’s the true legacy of BlackHawk.”
