Deer Tick return with their ninth studio album, Coin-O-Matic, a record that shines a light on the hidden histories of the band’s home state of Rhode Island—where the everyday dramas of working-class families have long collided with the menace of the mafia underworld.
As they tapped into that strange duality, singer/guitarist John McCauley, guitarist/singer Ian O’Neil, drummer Dennis Ryan, and bassist Christopher Ryan crafted a collection of songs exploring desperation, grief, redemption, and resilience with cinematic storytelling and lived-in emotion. The album arrives as a complicated love letter to a way of life slowly slipping from the collective memory.
Recorded at the band’s home studio, Coin-O-Matic marks the first time in their two-decade career that Deer Tick fully produced an album themselves. The freedom of working in their own space allowed the band to experiment while still capturing the raw immediacy of their live sound.
Across the record’s vivid vignettes—touching on lost love, aging, faith, family, and redemption—Deer Tick continue their tradition of emotionally honest songwriting and heartland-influenced indie rock.
