Born and raised in Los Angeles, Albright was already an accomplished saxophonist when he enrolled at the University of Redlands, but switched to bass after seeing Louis Johnson in concert. A few months after graduating, he joined Patrice Rushen’s band, later replacing the bassist mid-tour. Playing both sax and bass, he became a sought-after session and touring musician in the 80s, working with Anita Baker, Ray Parker, Jr., Atlantic Starr, The Temptations, Maurice White, Les McCann, Teena Marie, the Winans, and Whitney Houston.
He launched his solo career with Just Between Us (1987) and has remained a core figure in smooth jazz with chart-topping albums, radio hits, and all-star tours including Guitars & Saxes and Groovin’ For Grover. He toured with Phil Collins, recorded Pleasures of the Night with Will Downing, and had Grammy-nominated hits with 24/7 (Norman Brown) and Summer Horns (Dave Koz and Friends). Most recently, he has toured with South African gospel/jazz singer Jonathan Butler.
“Top to bottom,” Albright says, “Whether in concert, on the radio, or CD, I always want listeners to take a musical journey with different textures, rhythms, and moods, and to hear that I’m in a really good place in my life.”
