Vibrant, eclectic and truly original, the 2010 Grammy-nominated Hiroshima creates a musical world all its own. Featuring the luscious sound of June Kuramoto’s koto and the interwoven fabrics of Jazz, Japan, Salsa and more, their music journeys to the heart of their musical soul.
This fall Hiroshima releases its latest CD, J-Town Beat (#19), exploring the effort to retain culture in America while celebrating their roots in the groove, having fun and helping save J-Towns. The record features tracks including “Meiji Mambo,” “State of Mind,” “Red Buddha” and “Lady of Mystery,” along with collaborations with their musical brother Vinx.
In 1971, Duke Ellington proclaimed “that whole world was going [Asian],” a vision embodied by Hiroshima for more than three decades. The Los Angeles-based ensemble — Dan Kuramoto, virtuoso June Kuramoto, Kimo Cornwell, Land Richards and Dean Cortez — has blended jazz, pop and rock with traditional Japanese folk music and instruments, helping pioneer the contemporary world music movement.
Ever evolving, Hiroshima’s signature sound — highlighted by June Kuramoto’s shimmering koto, praised by Stanley Clarke as among the world’s best — remains deeply unique, filled with depth, heart and soul. After more than 30 years in the recording industry and nearly 4 million records sold, the group continues forging its own independent path while honoring the spirit and resilience behind its name.
