Jim Messina is an undisputed expert in the art of making hit music. Across five decades, he has built a legacy that spans three iconic groups, a successful solo career, and an impressive list of producing and engineering credits. His songwriting catalog includes classics like “Your Mama Don’t Dance,” “Angry Eyes,” “Danny’s Song,” “House at Pooh Corner,” and “You Better Think Twice.”
Messina began as producer and audio engineer for Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Buffalo Springfield before ultimately joining the band as its bassist. After the group disbanded in 1968, he and Richie Furay formed Poco, helping to pioneer the country-rock sound with Messina on lead guitar. Following three albums, he returned to his passion for producing and signed with Columbia Records.
When Columbia paired him with a then-unknown Kenny Loggins, the two discovered an undeniable musical chemistry. Their first collaboration, Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin’ In (1971), launched the accidental duo Loggins & Messina, who went on to release eight hit albums, score numerous charting singles, and sell over 16 million records before parting ways.
Since then, Messina has continued to record acclaimed solo projects and perform nationwide. With his current band, The Road Runners, he released the live album Here, There & Everywhere. Still touring to sold-out audiences, Jim says he’s enjoying rediscovering who he is, where he’s been, and where he’s headed next.
