Jonathan Butler is a singer-songwriter and guitarist whose life and career reflect the complex history of his native South Africa. Born under apartheid and raised in poverty, he became the first non-white artist played on South African radio and to appear on national television—breaking racial barriers through music. Nelson Mandela later credited Butler’s music as a source of inspiration during his imprisonment.
Gifted his first homemade guitar as a child, Butler’s musical talent emerged early. As a teenager, he toured South Africa performing in both segregated concert halls and township venues, experiences that shaped his worldview and artistic purpose. At just thirteen, he was discovered by British producer Clive Caulder and signed to Jive Records. His first single became the first by a Black artist played on white radio stations in South Africa and earned the country’s equivalent of a Grammy.
Butler’s self-titled debut album received a Grammy nomination for the hit “Lies,” followed by additional recognition for “Going Home” and “Sarah, Sarah,” establishing him as an international artist of depth and range. Beyond accolades, Butler measures success through faith, family, and service, carrying a spirit of resilience and warmth that defines both his life and his performances.
