For nearly two decades, Matisyahu has kept his creative spirit aflame by evolving his sound, melding genres, and testing the limits of the musical traditions that have inspired him. His recording career began in 2004, followed by his breakout hit “King Without a Crown,” which reached the Billboard charts in 2005.
Growing up outside New York City, Matisyahu was drawn to jam bands like Phish and the Grateful Dead before discovering Bob Marley and reggae. His early music blended the spirit of reggae with his spirituality and Jewish roots, leading to albums including the Grammy-nominated, Billboard No. 1 Youth in 2006 and the Gold-certified Live at Stubb’s. His music has continued to evolve, bringing together reggae, hip-hop, alt rock, and inventive pop.
Known for his high-energy live shows and improvisational approach, Matisyahu continues to explore the connections between eras, genres, and cultures. His Jewish heritage remains a central theme throughout his life and music, while his ever-evolving sound continues to keep that creative fire burning.
